Joann: I LOVED The Usual Suspects. It's an absolutely GENIUS movie and Kevin Spacey is brilliant (as usual - the man has serious range). This film is intelligent and requires that you don't zone out for even a second. When you get to the end and realize that everything you've seen is...well, I won't give it away, but when you do reach the "AHA" moment and your head tingles with realization and your mind plays back every moment of the film, yeah...that's the stuff. "Who IS Keyser Söze?" has become euphemism in our family for "WTF is really happening here?"
Jenny: Hands down, my favorite thriller is The Silence of the Lambs. It has a spectacularly fascinating villain (Hannibal Lecter), an interesting secondary villain (Buffalo Bill), and a likable heroine (FBI trainee Clarice Starling). This movie actually borders on horror for me, especially during the scenes where the Governor's daughter is kept in the well. "It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again!" Tight pacing, complex characters (you know I love characterization!) and a satisfying ending make for a movie that I can watch over and over again.
JB: I've got to go with Se7en. The seven deadly sins. Kevin Spacey at his absolute creepiest. You-know-who's head in a box. What's not to love? A close second for me would be And Then There Were None...it's caused me nightmares for years!
So what's YOUR favorite thriller movie, killer friends?
Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

I would have to go wit the Usual Suspect I really loved how smart and twisted Kevin Spacey's mind was.
I'd have to include Se7en near the top of the list. Definitely!
The movie TESIS (it's a Spanish film by Alejandro Amenabar) scared the pants off me, but maybe because I was living alone in a foreign country at the time. It's about a film student doing a thesis, and it's...disturbing. I walked around the streets of Sevilla completely freaked out for days.
Aaack...a movie question??? :-) :-) :-)
Soooo many to choose from. Silence of the Lambs and Usual Suspects definitely toward the very tippy top of the list. Will have to say The Cell. Such an underrated film, IMO.
I love Silence of the Lambs (definitely need to read that book), but my favorite is probably an earlier Thomas Harris thriller - Manhunter (1986). It's from his book The Red Dragon (yeah, it was remade in '02) and stars William Peterson of CSI fame. Directed by Michael Mann, it has a whole Miami Vice vibe, but man, was it creepy. It definitely stuck in my head.
DL - Se7en is definitely at the top of my list too! Such an amazing movie.
Jess - I've added it to our Netflix. Thank you for mentioning it! I'm always looking for foreign thrillers/horror movies. One of the best I've seen is TimeCrimes. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.
Mel - I really liked The Cell! Not the best acting, but a truly stunning film.
BE - Manhunter has always been one of my favs. It has the most wonderful tone and imagery. And, HELLO, Grissom!! Great choice. Did you see the remake with Edward Norton - Red Dragon? It's quite good.
I agree Joann, the acting was a little weak, but the story was so cool and freaky, and terrifying and beautiful that I forgive them (especially JLo, whom I LOVE) for the lame acting skills in that one.
Two Kevin Spacey films! I'm definitely in the right place.
*Spoiler about The Usual Suspects*
I wish I hadn't known who Keyser Söze was, but Spacey kind of gave it away at the Oscars, when he accepted his award and said, "I don't know who Keyser Söze is, but I have a good idea he's going to get drunk tonight." :P
Also, I saw an interview with the screenwriter, and he was working as a clerk for some detectives, I think, and would not only write down all that great slang, but all that barbershop in Poughkeepsie stuff? That Spacey read off the bulletin board? That's exactly where the guy found it - just looked up from where he was writing and jotted it down.
Mel - absolutely. The visuals were stunning enough that I not only own the movie, I've watched it several times.
OH NO, Maine!! That sucks to have such a brilliant movie spoiled before seeing it. I went in knowing nothing about it and was completely blown away (so lucky!). That's fascinating about the screenwriter. Another good argument for always paying attention!
I can't believe I've never seen The Usual Suspects. That changes tonight, because I'm pretty sure we own the movie! (It's one of my husband's faves.)
Jennifer Hillier!!!
*slaps your hand hard for being a very naughty girl*
How could have not seen that one? One of the most brilliant movies ever! Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it. Man I love that movie. The last five minutes alone are just OMG. Brilliant.
Se7en for me as well and also Fight Club (it's thriller-ish). Brad Pitt certainly isn't doing any harm. ;0
Then there's Basic Instinct, Silence of the Lambs, and anything Hitchcock... Oh well, I can't choose!
Se7en hands down. I watch that movie several times a year. Loves it.
There are many to add to the list though. Love Silence of the Lambs, The Usual Suspects, Enemy of the State, The Negotiator, The Cell...I could seriously keep going. I loves thrillers!!
Does Sleeping With The Enemy count? That movie is great.
I'm with Joann on this one. The Usual Suspects freaked me the feck out and the super villain behind it all has got to be one of the modern classic villains of the past few decades.
