How Picky Are You?

As a reader, I mean.  Although, if you want to talk about your taste in foods or clothes or cars, go for it.

As a reader, I'm not extremely picky.  I can read pretty much anything.  If it's well-written and in line with my favorite genres and personal philosophies, I'll love it.  If it's well-written and not in line, but not overly out there or preachy, I'll enjoy it.  If it's got a good premise, but the writing needs something, I'll still enjoy it most likely. Heck, I'll read the back of the cereal box if it's sitting there and I'm bored.

So far this year, I've read 13 books - paranormal romance, urban fantasy, SF, historical romance, straight romance, suspense, thriller, dystopian, adventure, and literature.  Most of them got 4 or 5 stars from me on Goodreads.

  I like books.  And I can forgive most flaws.

There were a few books I started this year and didn't finish.  I don't count those as read.  Some of them, I set aside for a time when I'm in the right frame of mind.  I mean, the book might still be good if I'm in a better place to read it.  Consider those a reading do-over.  Others, I opened, read a bit and knew that no matter where I was at, I wouldn't enjoy the story.  Not necessarily the writer's fault, so no harm no foul.  Lucky for me, the majority of those I got for free.  Really no harm, no foul.

I can't remember the last time I paid full price for a book I didn't finish reading... Okay, maybe that one about 4 years ago... :shudder:

What about you?  What do you read?  And how picky are you?

I tend to go through spurts with reading…sticking pretty close to one genre….or, if I'm really lucky and have found an author I love, I'll just read one author for a while.

Eclectic! And like you, B.E., if it has a good story, I'll keep reading - faults and all. If they don't grab me at the beginning, though, it's abandoned rather quickly. Too many books, too little time!

I'm actually a really picky reader - but I do also read cereal boxes, LOL! Some of them are riveting!

I judge a lot of contests and organizers love me because I don't care what genre I read. I have some that I enjoy more, but if a book is well-written, has a good plot and interesting characters, I'll read it. I did have one book from last year that ended up on my DNF shelf. If I remember correctly, it was a freebie, too--though from a well-known author. I'd read other books by her but this one just didn't do it for me and I figured with the huge piles of books I have--both physical and digital--why bother?

Of course, despite those huge piles, I've gone back to reread my favorite book and the next few books in that series. Because I can't help myself. LOLOL

I do that sometimes, JB, but lately I've been hopping all over. And I can't read one author's books all in a row. I get too sucked into their world and lose sight of reality a smidge. If that makes any sense.

Exactly, Janet. Too many books, too little time.

LOL Clarice. I give Cheerios 5 stars. ;o)

I always forget you do all that judging, Silver, and I guess I just assumed it was all in one genre. Too cool. Yep, life's too short to bother if the book doesn't hook you.
